My Specializations

Accessible Mental Health

I provide accessible mental health care to clients who are not able to access mental health in other ways.  I visit homebound clients – literally meeting them where they are.

Geriatric Wellness

I provide compassionate mental wellness support for older adults facing life transitions, chronic illness, grief, memory changes, or emotional distress. With a gentle, person-centered approach, I help seniors navigate challenges, strengthen coping skills, and enhance their sense of meaning, independence, and well-being.

Holistic Health

I support clients in understanding their habits and creating personalized health plans. I help those living with chronic illness find ways to improve their quality of life. Using mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral strategies, therapeutic art, stress-reduction tools, guided meditation, Reiki, and health education, I help clients build sustainable, healthy habits and reach their goals.

Co-Parenting Coaching

I help parents work together through mediation and coaching to reduce conflict, strengthen communication, and create child-centered co-parenting plans.

Legal Nurse Consulting

The LNC applies clinical expertise to support legal cases involving medical or health-related issues, acting as a bridge between the medical and legal worlds.

Why work with a Registered Nurse?

Highly Experienced: I am a registered nurse, licensed in New Brunswick, with over 40 years experience across many areas of healthcare, including chronic illness, community health, palliative and end-of-life care, pediatrics, neonatal and adult intensive care, addictions and mental health, and work withing First Nations communities.

Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Care: My care is guided by nursing theory and grounded in evidence-based practices. I draw from both modern and holistic approaches considering the mind, body, and spirit as interconnected parts of health and healing.

Collaborative and Personalized Support: I work closely with each client to explore care options and develop personalized wellness goals. Together we focus on the whole person, not just symptoms or diagnosis.

Empowerment and Active Listening: I provide a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard and empowered to take an active role in their own health and recovery journey.

Integrated Approach: By combining the best of Western medicine with holistic and mindfulness-based practices, I help clients build resilience, manage stress, and restore balance in all aspects of life.

Whole-Person Philosophy: I believe true wellness includes the mind, body, and spirit. Many physical and emotional challenges are connected, and healing one often helps the other. My goals is to support harmony and well-being in all areas of life.

Can nurses provide counselling in New Brunswick?

Yes.
New Brunswick Mental Health Nurses are authorized to perform therapeutic and counselling activities consistent with their training and competence as part of their Scope of Practice as defined  by the Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB). Nurses can also provide health education, supportive counselling, and act as a point of contact for mental health resources. Community Mental Health Nurses help clients navigate emotional, psychological and behavioral challenges.

Thanks to their nursing background, they also consider the connection between physical and mental health, offering a holistic approach to care. What types of services are provided by nurses?

Cognitive & Mental Health Assessments:
The Mental Health Nurse conducts mental health assessments and provides supportive evidence-based counselling such as cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, strength based coaching, motivational interviewing, screening for depression and anxiety (PHQ-9. GAD-7), cognitive screening (MoCA), and suicide assessment and intervention. Nurses who have completed specialized programs in these areas are best suited to provide this service.

Individualized Treatment Plans:
The Mental Health Nurse develops, monitors progress and re-evaluates individualized treatment plans based on evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) or mindfulness techniques.

Medication Reviews and Education:
The Mental Health Nurse monitors medications for therapeutic responses and provides clients education on medications including purpose, proper administration, intended effects and side effects if necessary. We can not prescribe medication, but can advocate with your family doctor as needed for you.

Supportive counselling:
The Mental Health Nurse provides support and increases awareness around mental health, and consults with inter-disciplinary team colleagues related to individual clinical care when required. Therapy helps clients work through emotional or mental health challenges, helping you to understand your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. We help you to consider alternative thoughts and behaviors to help you reach your goals.  Nurses use evidence-based techniques to help you cope with stress, heal from past experiences, improve communication and reconnect mind, body and spirit for balance. This is accomplished in a safe, warm, inviting, nonjudgmental space.

Health Education & Advocacy:
The Mental Health Nurse participates in educational programs that increase awareness of mental health, mental health services, helps clients navigate services,  and advocates for their clients and community.

Crisis Intervention:
Nurses can provide brief interventions and support to clients in acute distress and refers clients to specialized professionals, providing supportive care until such services can be accessed so the client is not left without support.

Specialized counselling:
Nurses who have specific training in mental health nursing, and certifications in specific modalities are well-equipped to provide more specialized supports.

Yes.
The nurse must work within their Scope of Practice as defined by the Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB) and their employer’s policies. The NANB has specific guidelines for nurses in private practice, calling upon the nurse to “have the adequate knowledge, skill and judgement to perform the activity (therapeutic technique) or procedure safely and competently. ” (Priest, S. 2020, NANB, n.d.)

What happens if my care needs are outside of the nurse’s scope of practice?

Nurses who recognize the client requires more intensive care:
Will refer the client to a specialized professional, providing support until such services can be accessed so the client is not left without support. Nurses often collaborate with other health car professionals to create a comprehensive care plan for their clients.
